wears
eternity tattooed
on her wrists
to hide the fractalled
mysteries of vein
and luminous
fragility, tracts
of yesterdays
that slide
beneath
tomorrow’s surfaces
like subway tunnels.
She knows
secrets:
when to
dance, where
to run,
how to
fly but
she
won’t tell,
ever;
keeps her smile
wrapped up tight
in shadow and
in truth
she
looks best illumined
by rooftop neons,
mirrorless and
deepening;
her eyes
change color
in the sun
about to
set,
the heart
about
to jump.
I can see her. This is Miami. She has many sisters. Very sadly too many. She has no smile and her truth is brutal.
Her truth is brutal, that’s for sure. Thanks, Carl.
Beautiful! I love the image of “eternity tattooed on her wrists.” Had me going in so many directions.
Thanks, Denise! I like that it can take you so many directions (though, as is often the case, the inspiration came from something more literal than you might imagine…) 😉
This is both powerful and melodic. Great images that have a true meaning. Well done.
Melanie
Thanks for stopping by, Melanie. Glad you liked it. Love the “cassiopeia rises,” by the way 🙂
‘her eyes change color in the sun about to set’…some lovely lines. Powerful imagery and perfectly paced – as usual! 🙂 // Peter.
Peter, you’re making me blush! 😉 Thanks, as always!
Great imagery … We can all wonder and guess how she looks.. but you made us see her soul.
oh i want to learn her secrets but know i can only appreciate her from afar….really well penned…
You give us a detailed look at the workings, inner and outer, of one who has experienced far more than she should have in too few years.
Very telling (showing too) in the way time is divided. Eternity on her wrists along with yesterday marked, with past getting under the skin of the future. Really cool how you compose that it in various line lengths that do not exceed 4 words! Seeing the sunset change in her eyes before that final “leap” produces a lovely effect.
Thanks, Adam. I hadn’t thought consciously about the line lengths–they just kind of came out that way– jagged and short. 🙂 Always appreciate your thoughts and kind words.
She sounds simply captivating…
Powerful poem…love this: “keeps her smile
wrapped up tight
in shadow and
in truth”
gorgeous and so, so sorrowful.
A great voice here. The tension at the end before the leap is perfect.
whoever she is, the poem describes her in a way I personally wanted to adopt something from her.
The secrets- when to dance and where to run, the smile wrapped in shadows and truth/ that’s appealing/,
the eyes changing colors with the set of the sun … she is lucky to have you write about …
*smile*
Beautiful piece! She is a wonderful person.
Thanks, Carl; about her– not sure that I agree, but I hope so!
Really descriptive in showing her from afar, very nice peice.
this:
“she wears
eternity tattooed
on her wrists
to hide the fractalled
mysteries of vein
and luminous
fragility,”
and this:
“her eyes
change color
in the sun
about to
set,
the heart
about
to jump.”
wow. you paint a vivid and heartrending picture with your words…
wow, thanks, Leslie. always appreciate your thoughtful take. cheers.
